At Future Force, we use the SDGs to guide our thinking about our impact areas. However, we're also working to make this framework more actionable and engaging for business stakeholders. As a start, we've grouped the 17 goals into 4 clusters (some goals are interconnected and fall into several clusters).

No Poverty

  • Around 836 million people worldwide live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than USD 1.25 a day.
  • One in four children is affected by extreme poverty.
  • Women are particularly vulnerable to risks such as early pregnancy, lack of education, and reduced earning power.
  • Poverty is more than just a lack of income or resources. It also encompasses hunger, a lack of basic services, insufficient education, social discrimination and exclusion, a lack of participation in decision-making, and a lack of protection from conflict.
  • More than four years of progress against poverty has been eradicated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

2030 TARGETS:

  • Eradicate extreme poverty for all.
  • Reduce by at least 50% the proportion of men, women, and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions.
  • Ensure equal rights to natural resources, basic services, and ownership and control over land/property.

  • Agriculture provides 80% of the food consumed in the developing world and livelihoods for 40% of the global population.
  • In 2022, the FAO's food price index increased by 14.3% from 2021, hitting the highest level since records began in 1990.
  • Climate change is compromising food production by rapidly degrading soils, freshwater, oceans, forests, and biodiversity.
  • Conflict, COVID-19, climate change, and growing inequalities are undermining food security worldwide. 

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Ensure year-round access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food for all.
  • End all forms of malnutrition, including meeting the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, and older people.
  • Double agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, especially women, indigenous people, family farmers, and fishers.
  • Promote sustainable food production systems and resilient agricultural practices that improve productivity and maintain ecosystems, thereby strengthening the capacity to adapt to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding, and other disasters. These practices should also progressively improve land and soil quality.
  • Increase investment in rural infrastructure, agricultural research, extension services, technology development, and gene banks for plants and livestock, especially in developing countries.

Good Health and Well-being

  • Malaria, tuberculosis, polio, and the spread of HIV/AIDS continue to impact life expectancy, particularly child and maternal mortality rates.
  • Each year, over 6 million children die before their fifth birthday.
  • Maternal mortality rates in developing regions are still 14 times higher than in developed regions.
  • Globally, adolescent girls and young women face gender-based inequalities and violence, putting them at an increased risk of acquiring HIV.
  • More than 225 million women worldwide have an unmet need for contraception.
  • COVID-19 has disrupted essential health services in 92% of countries, halted progress on universal health and immunization coverage, decreased global life expectancy, and increased the prevalence of anxiety and depression.

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Reduce maternal mortality to less than 70 per 100,000 live births.
  • End preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5. Reduce neonatal mortality to 12 per 1,000 live births and under-5 mortality to 25 per 1,000 live births.
  • End epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases. Combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases, and other communicable diseases.
  • Reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by one-third. Promote mental health and well-being.
  • Strengthen prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including tobacco, narcotic drug abuse, and harmful use of alcohol.
  • Halve global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents.
  • Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services, including family planning, information, and education.
  • Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential healthcare services, and access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable essential medicines and vaccines.
  • Substantially reduce deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and pollution.

  • Women are continuously discriminated against and suffer violence in every part of the world - 25% of women globally have been subjected to partner violence
  • Less than 60% of women make autonomous decisions on their career and reproduction

  • In many places, gender discrimination is normalized and accepted
  • Providing women and girls equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes is necessary for a peaceful and sustainable world

Clean Water and Sanitation

  • 3 billion people rely on water of unknown quality
  • 773 million people are subjected to high levels of water stress
  • 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services such as toilets or latrines.
  • Over the past 300 years 85% of the planet’s wetlands have been lost
  • Food scarcity, hunger, malnutrition (resulting from drought), livelihood choices, and educational opportunities for poor families across the world are impacted by lack of access to water.

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Achieve: (i) universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all; (ii) access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all
  • Improve water quality by reducing pollution and substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater
  • Implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate
  • Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management and expand international cooperation in the matter

  • 20% of the human population lacks access to electricity.
  • 2.4 billion people worldwide rely on polluting and inefficient cooking systems
  • The energy efficiency is growing at an insufficient rate (1.9% annual improvement rate vs needed 3.2%)
  • Access to energy is key to mitigating every major challenge and opportunity the world faces today— including production, employment, and security.

  • Economic growth is hampered by rising inflation, Covid-19 and uncertain geopolitical situation

Reduced Inequalities

  • Inequalities among countries rose for the first time in generation due to pandemic
  • The numbers of migrants who lost their lives rose to almost six thousand (the highest in 6 years)
  • Globally highest refugee figure ever
  • Between 2015 and 2021 the number of refugees outside their countries increased by 44% (311 per 100 000 people)
  • 20% of population globally has experienced discrimination

Sustainable Cities and Communities 

  • Currently, half of the world's population, or 3.5 billion people, live in cities. Unfortunately, 99% of the world's urban population breathes polluted air. Cities consume 60% to 80% of the world's energy and produce 75% of its carbon emissions, despite occupying just 3% of the Earth's land.
  • As cities expand, they face numerous urban challenges, such as congestion, insufficient funding for basic services, housing shortages, and aging infrastructure. In the next decade, 95% of urban expansion will take place in the developing world. This urbanization is putting pressure on fresh water supplies, sewage, the living environment, and public health.
  • The number of people living in slums is almost 1 billion and increasing.
  • In sub-Saharan Africa, less than one-third of city dwellers have convenient access to public transportation.

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Create cities that provide opportunities for all, with access to basic services, resources, and energy.
  • Ensure safe, affordable, and adequate housing for all, and improve slums.
  • Reduce the environmental impact of cities, particularly air quality and waste management.
  • Provide safe, affordable, and sustainable transportation systems for all, improving road safety and expanding public transport.
  • Enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization, and improve capacity for sustainable human settlement planning and management.
  • Protect and safeguard cultural and natural heritage.
  • Reduce deaths, people affected, and economic losses due to natural disasters.
  • Provide universal access to safe, inclusive, and accessible green and public spaces.
  • Support positive links between urban, peri-urban, and rural areas by strengthening development planning.

Responsible Consumption and Production

  • Unsustainable consumption and production are the root causes of pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
  • Too much food is lost or wasted in every country every day. 13.3% of the world's food is lost after harvesting and before reaching the retail market, and 17% of total food is wasted at the consumer level.
  • Less than 3% of the world's water is drinkable, and humans pollute water faster than nature can recycle it.
  • Our reliance on natural resources has increased globally by over 65% in the last two decades.
  • Households consume 29% of the world's energy and contribute to 21% of resultant CO2 emissions.

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Implement sustainable consumption and production programs worldwide.
  • Manage and use natural resources sustainably and efficiently.
  • Reduce per capita global food waste by half at the retail and consumer levels, and decrease food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.
  • Achieve environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste throughout their life cycles, and significantly reduce their release into the air, water, and soil.
  • Substantially reduce waste generation by preventing, reducing, recycling, and reusing.
  • Encourage companies, particularly large and transnational ones, to adopt sustainable practices and integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.
  • Promote sustainable public procurement practices.
  • Ensure that people everywhere have relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature.
  • Support developing countries in strengthening their scientific and technological capacity to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production.
  • Develop and implement tools to monitor the sustainable development impacts of sustainable tourism that create jobs and promote local culture and products.

Climate Action

  • Without action, the world's average surface temperature is expected to rise by more than 3°C over the next century. Since 1900, the average sea level has risen by 19cm. Since 1979, the Arctic's sea ice has lost 1.07 million km2 of ice every decade.
  • Global emissions of CO2 have increased by almost 50% since 1990. Energy-related CO2 emissions increased by 6% in 2021, reaching their highest-ever level.
  • Climate change is now affecting every country, disrupting national economies, affecting lives, and costing people and communities. The poor and vulnerable are affected the most.
  • The significant impacts of climate change include changing weather patterns, rising sea levels, and more extreme weather events. Droughts alone could displace about 700 million people by 2030, while the number of medium-to large-scale disasters will increase by 40% from 2015 to 2030. 

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Address climate change as a global challenge that transcends national borders. Emissions in one location can have an impact on people everywhere. Solutions must be coordinated at the international level to support a global low-carbon economy.
  • Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries.
  • Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies, and planning.
  • Improve education and awareness-raising efforts, as well as human and institutional capacity, on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warning.

Life Below Water 

  • Oceans cover 75% of the Earth's surface, containing 97% of its water and providing 99% of the planet's living space by volume.
  • More than 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods.
  • Oceans house nearly 200,000 identified species and absorb about 25% of the world's annual CO2 emissions.
  • 40% of the world's oceans are heavily impacted by human activities, including plastic pollution, overfishing, and loss of coastal habitats.
  • The sea provides and regulates our rainwater, drinking water, weather, climate, coastlines, a significant part of our food, and the oxygen we breathe.

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Prevent and significantly reduce all types of marine pollution.
  • Manage, conserve, and protect marine and coastal ecosystems, including by strengthening their resilience and stopping illegal and destructive fishing practices, including overfishing.
  • Minimize and address the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation.
  • Effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, and destructive fishing practices. Prohibit fishing subsidies.
  • Increase scientific knowledge, develop research capacity, and transfer marine technology.
  • Provide small-scale artisanal fishers with access to marine resources and markets.

Life on Land

  • Forests cover 30% of the Earth's surface, providing food security, and shelter, and playing a key role in combatting climate change and protecting biodiversity. Nevertheless, every year, 10 million hectares of forests are destroyed.
  • Agriculture is directly relied upon by 2.6 billion people, but 52% of the land used for it is moderately or severely affected by soil degradation, which results in 3.6 billion hectares of desertification.
  • Over 80% of the human diet comes from plants, with cereal crops providing 60% of human energy intake. However, almost 90% of global deforestation is due to agricultural expansion.
  • 8% of known animal breeds have gone extinct, and another 22% are at risk of extinction.

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Promote sustainable forest management, halt deforestation, and increase reforestation efforts.
  • Combat desertification by restoring degraded land and soil.
  • Ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems and their biodiversity.
  • Ensure conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems.
  • Take urgent action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt biodiversity loss, and protect threatened species.
  • Promote fair and equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources and ensure appropriate access to such resources.
  • End poaching and trafficking of protected flora and fauna species, and address illegal wildlife product demand and supply.
  • Prevent and reduce the impact of invasive alien species on ecosystems, and control or eradicate priority species.
  • Mobilize significant financial resources to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • Finance sustainable forest management and provide incentives for developing countries to advance such management, including conservation and reforestation.

Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

  • The world is currently experiencing the largest number of violent conflicts since 1946, and a quarter of the global population lives in conflict-affected countries.
  • Corruption is found in every region of the world. Almost 1 out of 6 businesses have received bribe requests from public officials. The judiciary and police are among the institutions most affected by corruption.
  • One third of the global population fears walking alone in their neighborhoods at night.
  • A record-breaking 100 million people have been forcibly displaced worldwide.

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates worldwide.
  • End abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all forms of violence, including torture, against children.
  • Promote the rule of law at national and international levels, and ensure equal access to justice for everyone.
  • Significantly reduce illicit financial and arms flows, strengthen the recovery and return of stolen assets, and combat all forms of organized crime.
  • Substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all forms.
  • Develop effective, accountable, and transparent institutions at all levels.
  • Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory, and representative decision-making at all levels.
  • Broaden and strengthen the participation of developing countries in global governance institutions.
  • Provide legal identity for everyone, including birth registration.
  • Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms.
  • Promote and enforce non-discriminatory laws and policies for sustainable development.

Partnerships for the Goals

  • To achieve a successful development agenda, it is important to create partnerships among governments, the private sector, and civil society. These partnerships should be based on principles, values, a shared vision, and shared goals that prioritize people and the planet.
  • Effective partnerships are essential at the global, regional, national, and local levels.
  • Developing countries require long-term investments, including foreign direct investment and private investment, in order to achieve sustainable development.

2030 TARGETS: 

  • Provide aid to developing countries to enhance their domestic response and mobilization.
  • Help developing countries achieve long-term debt sustainability.
  • Promote regional and international cooperation to share knowledge on science, technology, and innovation.
  • Improve developing countries' capacity for tax and revenue collection with domestic resource mobilization and international support.
  • Mobilize financial resources from multiple sources for developing countries.
  • Implement investment promotion regimes for least developed countries.
  • Transfer environmentally sound technologies to developing countries on favorable terms.
  • Increase exports of developing countries.
  • Ensure duty-free and quota-free market access on a lasting basis for all least developed countries.
